Free Legal Hotlines
Some local bar associations and lawyer referral services offer free legal advice hotlines as a public service. These legal hotlines are usually held once or twice a month in the evenings. Members of the public are welcome to call to speak to a lawyer who may be able to offer useful advice or recommend a course of action. Please see the websites below for more information about the services offered.
For the Public
The Austin LRS offers its LegalLine on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The phone number to call is (512) 472-8303.
The Dallas Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The phone number to call is (214) 220-7476.
The Houston Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The phone number to call is (713) 759-1133. This service is also offered in Spanish on the 1st Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the same phone number.
The Tarrant County Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The phone number to call is (817) 335-1239.
La Asociación de Abogados de Houston ofrece una línea telefónica por la cual uno puede hablar con un abogado gratis para recibir consejos legales. La línea telefónica se ofrece el 4º jueves de cada mes de las 6 p.m. hasta las 8 p.m. El número de teléfono es (713) 759-1133.
For Specific Legal Issues
Legal Aid of Northwest Texas offers an access and visitation legal hotline that provides parents with basic legal information about issues related to family law (e.g., child support). The hotline is available on weekdays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The phone number to call is (866) 292-4636. Spanish language assistance is also available.
Advocacy for Victims of Crime and Education (AVOICE)

The America Family Law Center offers legal information relating to family law issues and may also provide brief consultations with volunteer attorneys over the phone. There are various phone numbers to call depending on your city — see the website for details.
Asian American Family Services offers an "Ask the Lawyer Day" for low-income families. They provide free civil legal assistance. The hotline is available every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The phone number to call is (713) 600-9400.
The Equal Justice Center provides free legal advice regarding employment matters (e.g., unpaid or low wages) to low-income workers. There are several telephone numbers to call: in Austin, (512) 474-0007; in San Antonio, (210) 308-6222; in Dallas, 1-800-853-4028.
Texas Advocacy Project offers three separate legal hotlines for victims of family or domestic violence, victims of sexual assault, and for related family law issues. They provide assistance with civil legal questions related to domestic violence, protective orders, divorce, child custody, powers of attorney, guardianship, and related matters. Fort Bend Lawyers Care offers a bi-weekly legal advice hotline for Fort Bend County residents. This Legal Line is available every other Friday (except holidays) and calls for qualification are accepted from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. To pre-qualify, call (281) 239-0015 and an attorney will get back to you that same day or the following Monday. The Texas Foster Youth Justice Project helps current and former foster youth by providing free legal advice, assistance, guidance, and representation in enforcing foster youth rights. They also assist with legal barriers to a successful transition out of foster care. Additionally, they assist those who work with foster youth, including caseworkers, attorneys ad litem, and foster parents. Their hotline is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The number to call is 1-877-313-3688. They are also available via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
LASSA attorneys provide sexual assault survivors with legal information and advice about legal issues that may arise following a sexual assault. Callers may remain anonymous if they wish. The hotline is answered by attorneys seven days a week. The phone number to call is 1-844-303-SAFE (7233).
Legal Hospice of Texas provides legal assistance to people with AIDS, HIV, or a terminal illness. They assist with legal problems related to estate planning, insurance, credit, housing, employment benefits/discrimination, public benefits, and family law. The phone number to call is (214) 521-6622.
The Woodlands Bar Association offers their free Law Line to answer legal questions for residents of Montgomery County. The hotline is available on the 1st Monday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The phone number to call is (281) 645-6344.
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas offers an advice hotline for Texans who live within their service area (not including residents of Dallas and Tarrant counties). The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and then again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m (except on holidays). The phone number to call is 1-888-529-5277.
The Texas Legal Services Center and the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault provide a free and confidential legal hotline for victims of sexual assault. The hotline is available on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number to call is (888) 343-4414.
The Texas Advocacy Project offers three free legal hotlines: Family Violence Legal Line, Family Law Hotline, and the Sexual Assault Legal Hotline. These hotlines are staffed by attorneys during business hours. Please review the information on their website to find out more about qualifications and how they can help. The Texas Legal Services Center offers a free legal hotline for low-income Texas veterans and their families (with a focus on outreach to the disabled veterans who live in rural areas of the state). They provide assistance with civil legal questions. The phone number to call is 1-800-622-2520, option 2. The Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans program from the State Bar of Texas may also be able to connect veterans with free or low-cost legal assistance.
