A Reference Guide to Texas Law and Legal History by Marian Boner

May 6, 2013

Feature

This is the go-to book for Texas legal history questions. Ms. Boner became an expert in early Texas law through her work at UT's Tarlton Law Library and at the State Law Library. While a mere 108 pages, her book is filled with details invaluable to researchers. It first discusses the influence other nations had on the development of Texas law. She then provides an excellent explanation of the various Texas constitutions. Her thorough history of the publication of Texas statutes enables researchers to confidently trace statutory provisions. Published in 1976, there are no references to websites -- only detailed footnotes and valuable appendices. After its publication, she began work on a second edition; after her death, however, it was completed as a tribute to her and the continuing value of her book.
