“Can a seventeen year-old leave home?” A Legal Research Guide

February 17, 2014

Feature

The reference librarians created legal research guides for specific areas of the law. These guides contain resources that can help you research a legal issue.

The library often receives questions from the public regarding whether a seventeen year-old can leave home, so this research guide was created to provide information on juveniles and the age of majority in Texas. It links to plain English information on the rights of juvenile victims of domestic violence and to chapters of the Texas Family Code and the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code as well as Texas Attorney General opinions. Since this is a complex legal question, the guide cannot provide a definitive answer. Instead, it provides information on resources available both online and in the library for further research on juvenile rights and delinquency. Contact information is also provided for hotlines assisting Texas minors.
