Gun Laws

Feature

Anyone who owns a firearm in Texas should be aware of the state's gun laws. The State Law Library often receives questions related to "open carry," "concealed carry," and "campus carry." To assist in answering those questions, our librarians have created a research guide on gun laws.

This research guide includes information on:

  • State and federal laws governing firearms
  • "Plain English" summaries of those laws
  • Information from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) on handgun licensing
  • FAQs on firearms from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

Additionally, our list of restrictions on convicted felons includes information regarding restrictions on firearms, guns, handguns, and weapons (in general). While we do not warrant this collection to be a comprehensive and complete listing of all restrictions, it is an attempt to bring together many of these restrictions for easier access by the public

If you have any questions or would like more information about our other Legal Research Guides please don't hesitate to Ask a Librarian!
