Free Legal Hotlines

Some local bar associations and lawyer referral services offer free legal advice hotlines as a public service. Members of the public are welcome to call to speak to a lawyer who may be able to offer useful advice or recommend a course of action. Some legal hotlines are available during regular business hours, while others are only held once or twice a month in the evenings. Please check the websites for more information on times, dates, and services offered.

This calendar provides upcoming dates for general legal hotlines that are held a few times a month.

LegalLine (provided by the Austin Lawyer Referral Service)

The Austin LRS offers its LegalLine on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The phone number to call is (512) 472-8303. Attorneys who are bilingual (English/Spanish) are available / También se habla español.

LegalLine (provided by the Dallas Bar Association)

The Dallas Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The phone number to call is (214) 220-7476. Spanish-speaking attorneys may be available / Es posible que también se hable español ciertos días.

LegalLine (provided by the Houston Bar Association)

The Houston Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The phone number to call is (713) 759-1133. This service is also offered in Spanish on the 1st Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the same phone number.

LegalLine (provided by the Tarrant County Bar Association)

The Tarrant County Bar Association offers its LegalLine on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The phone number to call is (817) 335-1239.

This website allows you to ask a lawyer a legal question in writing. You will receive an email when an attorney has answered your question. Only those who meet certain criteria qualify for this service. The American Bar Association runs this service.

Legal Hotline for Texans Over Age 60 or Medicare Recipients

The Texas Legal Services Center offers a free legal hotline for Texans over the age of 60 or Texans who receive Medicare. The phone number to call is 1-800-622-2520.

Veteran's Legal Assistance Project

The Texas Legal Services Center offers a free legal hotline for low-income Texas veterans and their families (with a focus on outreach to the disabled veterans who live in rural areas of the state). They provide assistance with civil legal questions. The phone number to call is 1-800-622-2520, option 2. The Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans program from the State Bar of Texas may also be able to connect veterans with free or low-cost legal assistance.

Fort Bend County Residents

Fort Bend Lawyers Care offers a legal advice hotline for Fort Bend County residents. Calls for pre-qualification are accepted from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Fridays. To pre-qualify, call (281) 239-0015 and an attorney will get back to you that same day or the following Monday.

Legal Aid of Northwest Texas Telephone Intake and Advice

Legal Aid of Northwest Texas offers free legal help by phone. The hotline is available for Texans who qualify and who live within their service area (except Dallas and Tarrant counties). The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and then again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m (except on holidays). Wait times can be long; please expect to hold for 30 minutes or longer. The number to call is 1-888-529-5277. Calls will be answered in both English and Spanish. Callers who speak other languages can also be helped via the use of an international interpreter.

Montgomery County Residents

The Woodlands Bar Association offers their free Law Line to answer legal questions for residents of Montgomery County. The hotline is available on the 1st Monday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The phone number to call is (281) 645-6344

Texas Access to Justice (TAJ)

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid offers this legal hotline for those who qualify and live within their service area. The hotline is available Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The phone number to call is 1-888-988-9996. Spanish language assistance is also available / También se habla español.

Waxahachie Telephone Intake

Legal Aid of Northwest Texas offers telephone intake every Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for those who qualify and live in their Waxahachie service area. The phone number to call is (972) 923-3344.

Access and Visitation Hotline

The Texas Office of the Attorney General's Child Support Division offers an access and visitation legal hotline that provides parents with basic legal information about issues related to family law issues, such as custody, visitation, and child support. The hotline is available on weekdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number to call is (866) 292-4636. Spanish language assistance is also available / También se habla español.

CPS Family Helpline

The Family Helpline is staffed by lawyers who can provide legal information and education regarding CPS (Child Protective Services) issues. They can provide information regarding CPS investigations, service plans, legal terms, kinship care, what to expect in court, and other related topics. It is a project of the Texas Legal Services Center, the Texas Children's Commission, the Children's Justice Act, and the Texas Access to Justice Foundation. The Family Helpline is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The phone number to call is (844) 888-6565. Texas Advocacy Project

The Texas Advocacy Project offers two free legal hotlines: the Hope Line, which addresses a variety of legal concerns related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, and the Pro-Bono Attorney Line, which is reserved for attorneys seeking legal assistance for pro bono domestic violence cases. These hotlines are staffed by attorneys Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Hope Line is available at (800) 374-4673. The Pro-Bono Attorney Line is available at (866) 598-4277.

Austin Tenants' Council Telephone Counseling

The Austin Tenants' Council offers a Telephone Counseling Line for residents of Travis, Hays, and Williamson County. Trained housing counselors can discuss tenant/landlord issues and can offer options as well as referrals, but they cannot provide any legal advice. The hotline is available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The phone number to call is (512) 474-1961. For non-English speakers, interpreters may be available by appointment. Online counseling is available for residents of Travis and Hays County. In-person counseling is available at no cost for residents of Travis, Hays, and Williamson County who meet certain income qualifications; all others must pay a fee for in-person counseling.

Fair Housing Program of San Antonio

The City of San Antonio's Fair Housing/Housing Counseling Program provides mediation, counseling, and referrals to renters, landlords, and homeowners in San Antonio. HUD-certified housing counselors are trained to resolve disputes between residential tenants and landlords, but they are not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice. HOA Hotline

The HOA Hotline from the Greater Houston Chapter of the Community Associations Institute is staffed with local non-attorney experts who are knowledgeable in best practices for property owners' associations (i.e., homeowners' associations or HOAs). Because they are not attorneys, they will not provide any legal advice. For assistance, the hotline is available during normal business hours, and the telephone number to call is (832) 251-1874. You can also submit your question online.

Housing Discrimination Complaints

If you believe you may have been discriminated against in housing, the Civil Rights Division of the Texas Workforce Commission provides information on how to submit a housing discrimination complaint. They also provide information about housing discrimination on their website. You can submit a complaint online, or you can call their office at (512) 463-2642 or toll-free (Texas only) at (888) 452-4778.

Houston Apartment Association

The Houston Apartment Association offers a free renter's line for questions about renter rights, leases, and rental applications. The hotline is available on Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and on Thursdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The phone number to call is (713) 595-0300.

South Texas Fair Housing Project

The South Texas Fair Housing Project services 37 counties in south Texas — see their website for a full list of counties. They accept housing complaints and can also provide information about your rights. The phone number to call is (210) 733-3247 or toll-free at (866) 733-4953.

Texas Association of Realtors Legal Hotline

The Texas Association of Realtors Legal Hotline is available for all Texas realtors. Have your TREC license number ready when you call, and be prepared to wait for a return call once your license is verified. The phone number to call is (800) 873-9155.

Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA)

LASSA advocates provide sexual assault survivors with information and advice about legal issues that may arise following a sexual assault. The phone number to call is 1-800-991-5153. Spanish language assistance is also available / También se habla español.

Advocates for Victims of Crime (AVOICE)

The Texas Legal Services Center and the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault provide a free and confidential legal hotline for victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse or assault, stalking, cyber-stalking, or any other form of violent crime. The phone number to call is (888) 343-4414, or you can contact AVOICE online. If you need assistance in a language other than English, an interpreter or native speaker may be available to speak with you.

Stop Abuse For Everyone (SAFE) SAFEline

SAFEline may provide direct legal representation and legal advice for survivors of domestic abuse, child abuse, sexual assault, and sex trafficking. The phone number to call is 1-512-267-7233. You can also text them directly at 1-737-888-7233, or you can chat with SAFE online. Spanish language assistance is also available / También se habla español.

The State Bar of Texas offers this hotline to help disaster victims find legal assistance in their area. The phone number to call is (800) 504-7030. Assistance is available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid — Disaster Assistance

For those who need legal assistance after a disaster, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid offers this hotline for those who qualify and live within their service area. The phone number to call is 1-866-757-1570. Spanish language assistance is also available / También se habla español.

Division of Workers' Compensation

The Division of Workers' Compensation offers several hotlines for concerns regarding workers' compensation claims, workplace safety, suspected workers' compensation fraud, and other issues. Please view the organization's website for the numbers to call.

Equal Justice Center — Workers' Rights and DACA Applications

The Equal Justice Center provides free legal advice regarding employment matters (e.g., unpaid or low wages) to low-income workers. They also provide assistance preparing and submitting applications for the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). For assistance regarding your rights at work, call (800) 853-4028; for DACA application help, call (888) 670-6854. See the organization's website for the number of the EJC location nearest you. South Central Pension Rights Project

The Texas Legal Services Center offers a free hotline for assistance with employer-sponsored retirement benefits. Their services are offered regardless of income status. The phone number to call is 1-800-443-2528.

Texas Foster Youth Justice Project

The Texas Foster Youth Justice Project helps current and former foster youth by providing free legal advice, assistance, guidance, and representation in enforcing foster youth rights. They also assist with legal barriers to a successful transition out of foster care. Additionally, they assist those who work with foster youth including caseworkers, attorneys ad litem, and foster parents. The number to call is 1-877-313-3688. They are also available via e-mail at info@texasfosteryouth.org.

Texas Immigrant Rights Hotline

The Texas Immigrant Rights Hotline is staffed by volunteer attorneys who can answer questions about immigration law and provide referrals for legal services. This hotline is provided by the Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative, the ACLU of Texas, the Tahirih Justice Center, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, and the Vinson & Elkins law firm. The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except on holidays. The phone number to call is 1-833-468-4664. If you need assistance in a language other than English, a translator may be available to assist.

Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) Rules Queue

The TSBP Rules Queue is a hotline created to assist Texans with questions or issues about Texas pharmacy laws and rules. Please see their website for FAQs and TSBP rules. The phone number to call is (512) 305-8070.
